During the summer, the office of Leadership Development sponsors three on-campus "academies" for incoming first year students. Each academy has approximately 20 participants who are selected from among the strongest applicants in the incoming first year class. The 4-day academies are an opportunity to meet and get to know other new students while learning about a model of leadership and service that will guide students in their college careers and beyond. Participants have the opportunity to:
- enhance their leadership skills
- form lasting bonds with fellow students
- learn about themselves, how they work with others, and how they will become a part of the ASU and Boone communities
- learn the kind of contribution you can make to Appalachian in the years ahead
We believe that Appalachian is your legacy and that the person you become while you're here will be Appalachian's legacy. Trailhead is a time to begin thinking about what your legacy will be.
Here's What Some Trailhead Participates and Guides Have to Say About the Academy
"During the four days with the Trailhead family, I realized that Appalachian State is the perfect home for me. Each one of us found something that made us valuable- it might have been showing leadership in community service, or just being there for a friend talking through a hard time. I know this experience will stick with me for my next four years at App and beyond. Keep doing the way."

Biology Major, Class of 2019
"During my time at Appalachian, I was a bit of a late bloomer when it came to getting involved on campus, so it was awesome helping these incoming Freshmen get an early jumpstart on some fantastic opportunities I missed out on. Being part of a Trailhead Academy gives students a foundation of friendship within their freshmen class, faculty on campus, as well as upperclassmen (a foundation that is priceless in my opinion). Trailhead Academy ignited my passion for working with students, and outlined my career path. I cannot wait to see the amazing things held in these participants' futures."
